Putin sieht neues Wettrüsten

Einmal mehr kritisierte Putin die Rakentabwehrpläne der USA in Osteuropa:

„They try to persuade us that all these actions are not aimed against Russia,“ he said, „but they have no constructive answers to our well-founded concerns.“ (Independent)

Unbewaffneter Iraker erschossen

Vor einem Militärgericht in Irak hat am vergangenen Freitag der US-Army-Scharfschütze und Ausbilder Sgt. Michael A. Hensley ausgesagt, einem Untergebenen die Erschiessung eines unbewaffneten Irakers befohlen zu haben. Der Mann sei einer Scharfschützenposition zu nahe gekommen. Anschliessend habe man zur Verschleierung ein AK-47 Gewehr neben den Toten gelegt. (NYT)

Alarmierende Umweltstudie für Anwohner der „Great Lakes“

The Center for Public Integrity has obtained the study, which warns that more than nine million people who live in the more than two dozen “areas of concern”- including such major metropolitan areas as Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, and Milwaukee – may face elevated health risks from being exposed to dioxin, PCBs, pesticides, lead [Blei], mercury [Quecksilber], or six other hazardous pollutants [gefährliche Umweltgifte]. Die Studie wurde vom Umweltministerium 7 Monate lang unter Verschluss gehalten.
